Played on a 9×9 grid of 81 intersections. Black moves first; players alternate placing one stone on an empty point or passing. A group with no liberties left is captured; suicide moves and immediate ko recaptures are illegal. Two consecutive passes end the game, decided by Chinese area scoring — stones on the board plus empty regions bordered only by your stones, with White adding 5.5 komi.
Traditional Go is played on much larger boards, but 9×9 keeps every rule of the game — liberties, captures, ko, area scoring — while producing shorter games that suit online play.
